Cochin nas zachwycil. No moze nie cale miasto, ale jego historyczne czesci - Fort Cochin i Mattancherry. Pierwsi osadnicy przybyli tutaj okolo 600 lat temu. Swoje pietno odcisneli na miescie Portugalczycy, Holendrzy, Brytyjczycy. Jest to jedno z niewielu miejsc w Indiach, gdzie mozna zwiedzic nie tylko swiatynie hinduistyczna, meczet czy kosciol ale rowniez 400 letnia piekna synagoge. Do dzis mieszka tu niewielka grupa Zydow i w niektorych domach w dzielnicy zydowskiej mozna zobaczyc mezuzy przy drzwiach. Sama dzielnica bardzo sie ostatnio zmienila - skomercjalizowala, mnostwo tu sklepow ukierunkowanych na turystow, sprzedajacych ciuchy, bizuterie i pseudo sztuke. Za to do dzis istnieja i maja sie dobrze hurtownicy przypraw. Trafilismy do paru takich miejsc, oczywiscie zapach niesamowity! Niektorzy specjalizuja sie tylko w jednej przyprawie - na przyklad handluja jedynie suszonym imbirem, inni maja caly asortyment.
Poza tym duzo tu architektury kolonialnej, glownie w Fort Cochin: koscioly, budynki w ktorych miescily sie rozne instytucje oraz rezydencje. Ogromnie podobaja mi sie tez wielkie drzewa, kilkusetletnie, ktore daja cien w skwarze dnia.
Wzdluz wybrzeza mozna podziwiac ogromne chinskie sieci, od setek lat uzywane przez tutejszych rybakow, to jakby symbol tego miasta i jego roznorodnosci.
Nie moglismy ominac przedstawienia "Kathakali" - to jakby cos posredniego miedzy tancem a teatrem. Aktorzy poswiecaja bardzo duzo czasu na charakteryzacje po czym w pieknych strojach, przy akompaniamencie muzyki, odgrywaja sceny ze slynnego eposu staroindyjskiego "Mahabharata".
We fell in love with Cochin! It must be the first big city which we found so charming and attractive. Not all of it of course, but the historical parts of Fort Cochin and Mattancherry are the exception. The first settlers arrived here about 600 years ago and since then the Portugese, Dutch and British have left their mark on the town. It must also be one of the most unique places in India where not only one can visit a hindu temple, mosque or church but also a lovely 400 year old synagoge. There is still a small Jewish comunity living Jew Town but unfortunately it has become very comercialised and everywhere you look there are shops selling clothes, jewellery or pseudo art. Not far from Jew Town there are still some fascinating wholesalers specialising in spices and other items. When you enter one of those places the smell is very pungent and the aromas of different spices seem to blend together. Some of them specialise only in one type of spice, for example: ginger, others deal with dozens of different kinds.
In Fort Cochin there are many beautiful streets with some impressive colonial buildings, churches, mansions, old clubs or offices. We were also especially impressed by huge old trees that give shade on a hot day.
Walking along the shore we found lots of Chinese fishing nets that have been used by local fishermen for hundreds of years! They became one of the symbols of Cochin.
We went to see a "Kathakali" performance, which is something in between dance and theatre. The actors spend a lot of time doing their elaborate make-up and then, when dressed beautifully, they perform scenes from ancient Indian poems and are accompanied by classical Indian music.
